-love of nature, pantheism: belief of nature with God

-rejection of Romanticism
-literature stressed ordinary characters in real life settings, direct language
-art depicted everyday life of ordinary people, peasants, workers, etc.
Ex: Gustave Flaubert, Willaim Thackeray, Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet

-Workers rights earned, art/literature not just for the wealthy
-more educated, wider audience of art/literature
